Negative Keywords are a Trap. We Found a Loophole.

What happens when you realize "cheap" invited 47 cousins on the family trip you're funding.

Updated today

That search term you negated last week? Yeah, it’s back in a new disguise.

And you’ve wasted $3k so far (and counting).

You’re selling premium yoga mats at $79. Your target audience? Wellness-focused women who value quality over price.

But Amazon doesn’t care.

Over 4 months, you’re paying for “cheap” in 49 different variations—“cheap yoga mats” ➡️”cheap workout mats yoga” ➡️”affordable cheap exercise mats”...

Each variation gets 15-30 clicks before you notice. 0 orders.

You’ve burned $3k showing your premium mat to bargain hunters who will never buy.

The problem? You used Broad/Phrase match. But you didn’t filter out waste words.

The fix? Negate the waste words—"cheap," "discount," "affordable," "budget"—before they spawn variations.

What becomes possible:

✔ Immediate drop in wasted clicks—budget reallocates to better traffic automatically.

✔ ️Campaign metrics improve—Amazon's algorithm notices better engagement and starts favoring your ads.

✔ ️Cleaner data—you can actually see patterns in what's working.

✔ New campaigns launch pre-protected—waste words can't infiltrate them from day one.

Kill the waste words once. Stop the $3k bleed.

If you'd set this up 4 months ago, that $3k would still be in your account.

Takes 3 minutes. Here's How:

Step 1: Find Your Waste Words

1. From your Scale Insights account, navigate to Ads Insights.

2. Select Main words.

3. Apply the filter “Unique Word with 0 Sales” and a lookback period of 60 days. Click Update.

4. You'll see every word bleeding budget with zero return. (This is where you'd find "cheap" with 49 variations draining $3k.)

5. Here's a real example: "transparent" = 54 clicks, $25.15 wasted, 0 orders.

Small individually. Multiply this across 49 waste words = your $3k bleed.

Step 2: Auto-Kill Them

1. Navigate to Automation > Negative word rule.

2. Select the Negative word rules tab. Select the [ASIN] Remove 0 Conversion preset rule. (Kills any word at 25 clicks with 0 orders—adjust this later if needed.)

3. Assign it to your Broad/Phrase ad groups → Click Assign.

✅ Done. Auto-negation is now active.

Waste words get killed at 25 clicks—before they spawn 47 variations.

Want to kill waste words instantly instead of waiting for 25 clicks?

Blacklist them manually:

1. In that same Main Words view from Step 1, toggle the Blacklist button on waste words like "cheap," "discount," "affordable."

2. Navigate to Automation > Blacklist/whitelist rule > Blacklist/whitelist rules tab.

3. Click Edit for your ASIN → Confirm the words appear in Negative Phrase List.

4. Select the Broad/Phrase ad group(s) to apply the blacklist to and select Enabled. Click Assign.

✅ Done. This prevents them from wasting even one click.

What Just Happened:

✔ You stopped waste words before they multiply

✔ Your budget now goes to buyers, not bargain hunters

✔ New campaigns launch pre-protected from day one

No more $3k bleeds. No more whack-a-mole.
