Part 4: Long-Term Bleeder Management with Automation Rules

This article explains how to use Negative Rules and Bidding Rules in Scale Insights to automate the ongoing management of inefficient search terms and keywords.

Updated over a week ago

Set up automation rules in Scale Insights to continuously control inefficient search terms and keywords over time.

Use automation after you have:

• Cleaned up obvious spend waste

• Identified performers

• Structured those performers into SKC campaigns

Automation helps maintain account hygiene without daily manual intervention.

Rule 1: Negate Search Terms Without Orders

Purpose:

Automatically block search terms that spend but never convert.

Criteria:

• Date range: Last 90 Days

• Orders = 0

• Spend ≥ $10

Step 1: Navigate to Negative Rules

  1. Go to Automation → Negative Rule

Step 2: Set the Data Range

  1. Days to analyze: 90 days

  2. Days to ignore: 2 days

This excludes very recent data from triggering actions.

Step 3: Create the Criteria Profile

  1. Click Create new criteria

  2. Set conditions:

    • Orders = 0

    • Spend ≥ $10

Suggested naming format:

ASIN_ProductName | Spend ≥ $10, Ord = 0

Make the criteria accessible for both Negative Rules and Bidding Rules.

Step 4: Configure the Rule

Set the following options:

• Search terms source: ASIN Search Terms

• Negative type: Negative Exact

• Scope: Keyword and ASIN

Apply negatives at:

Ad Group level if you use 1 Campaign : 1 Ad Group

Campaign level if you have multiple ad groups

Blacklist: Enabled

This ensures negated terms are blocked across all applicable campaigns.

Step 5: Assign the Rule

  1. Filter for Broad, Phrase, and Auto ad groups

  2. Bulk select the relevant campaigns and ad groups

  3. Select the rule and click Assign

Rule 2: Negate Inefficient Search Terms With Orders

Purpose:

Control inefficient spend where search terms convert but at poor efficiency.

Criteria:

• Date range: Last 90 Days

• ACoS ≥ 50%

• Spend ≥ $10

Follow the same steps as Rule 1, changing only the criteria.

When assigning, add this rule so it stacks with Rule 1.

Rule 3: Pause Keywords Without Orders

Purpose:

Automatically stop keyword-level spend where there are no conversions.

Criteria:

• Date range: Last 30 Days

• Observation period = 2 Days

• Orders = 0

• Spend ≥ $10

Action:

• Pause keyword

Set this up under Automation → Bidding Rule, using keyword-level triggers.

Recommended priority: 100

Rule 4: Lower Bids for Inefficient Keywords With Orders

Purpose:

Reduce bids where keywords convert but at high cost.

Criteria:

• Date range: Last 30 Days

• Observation period = 2 Days

• ACoS ≥ 60%

• Spend ≥ $20

Action:

• Decrease bid by 30%

Recommended settings:

• Minimum bid: $0.70

• Rule priority: 99

This ensures pausing rules take precedence over bid reductions.

By stacking Rules 1 through 4, Scale Insights can automatically manage inefficient spend while you focus on strategy, testing, and growth.
